With the support and high level co-operation from the Government of Nigeria (the host country) and other active member states, the Secretariat was able to achieve the following amongst other successes:
- Establishmentof office premises, furniture and equipment for the Secretariat.
- Organization of Five Committee Meetings so far.
- Securing the funding of official activities and programmes of Abuja MoU from the Maritime (Special) Fund approved by the Federal Executive Council of the Federal Republic of Nigeria through a Memo submitted by the Abuja MoU Secretariat.
- Signing of Headquarters Agreement between Abuja MoU and Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
- Development of Abuja MoU information System (AMIS) and subsequent training on the implementation of the software in Abuja, Nigeria, April 2006 and Pointe Noire, Congo, May 2007.
- Facilitation of the Maritime Administration in Nigeria to appear on the IMO White List.
- Involvement of the Secretariat on the Rescue Team set up by the Federal Ministry of Transport to retrieve the stranded Nigerian registered vessel "MV Christmas Day" from the Port of Dakar, Senegal in 2001 and "MV Abuja" in the port of Colombo-Sri Lanka in 2002 through collaboration with the Indian Ocean MoU Secretariat.
- Sensitization tour of some member States to encourage them to implement ISM and ISPS Codes in a uniform manner across the sub-region. The Countries visited then were:- Cote d'Ivoire, Cape Verde, the Gambia, Senegal , Gabon, Congo and Angola.
- Participation in the Committee Meetings of the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Indian Ocean MoUs, and also IMO Workshops for PSC MoU/Agreement Secretaries and Directors of Information Centres held in London.
- Signing of Cooperation Agreement between Abuja MoU and IMO. By this agreement IMO and Abuja MoU will consult each other on matters of common interest to the two organizations with a view to ensuring maximum cooperation on work and activities of the two organizations.
- Securing of observer status with Paris MoU and Black Sea MoU.
